Well it all started out on an early Monday morning with a girl named Ashley. She was a very average looking Hispanic girl with curly hair and tan skin. Except for her height, because yo
u see Ashley is only 4’11″ tall. That’s what led her to be a little trouble maker. Ashley was considered a trouble maker because of the way she acted with the teachers and other school authority. Ashley hated whenever a teacher told her that she was in the wrong place because of her height. Teachers didn’t like her because of her attitude towards them and because they also knew that she was jumped into a gang of Crip’s. Teachers thought less of her even though she was pretty smart for her age. Even though Ashley didn’t show it in the classroom, because she always got one of the 3 lowest grades in her class and always had to make up work just to barely pass with a ‘D-’. That’s one of the reason why teachers thought less of Ashley because of how she dressed and acted with them. You see Ashley was a Crip till the end. She always wore a Royal Blue shirt or a White shirt with Black pants and Royal Blue or Black Converse. At least once a week Ashley got into a fight with a Slob well in other terms a “Blood.” ‘Cause you see Crips and Bloods don’t really get along well with each other, but vary rarely they do. Ashley was always in the front office for either fighting, language, drugs, color restriction, attitude, dress code and ect. Alot of people had respect for Ashley even though they might not now her except for her name and what she look’s like. The other students in her grade, well in the school system respected her alot even more than authority from adult figures. And when Ashley thought about it she thought of a saying “Big things come in small packages.”

Sammie,
Your story is very provocative. I am wondering why the students respected
Ashley…is it because she was strong and tough even though she was small?
What will happen next in Ashley’s life? This is a great a beginning to a short novel. Will you be telling us more? I can’t wait to read your next story. Thanks for your help launching the zine! Write on, Peggy Jenkins, GEAR UP Writing Specialist
