Racism has been around for ages; consequently, it has enslaved thousands and took the lives of many. Back then, you couldn’t walk into a restaurant without being threatened or abused in some way. Now we live in a time where we are all treated the same black or white, so why is this years presidential election looked at as a battle of the races? If Obama wins the election or loses, there will be a huge controversy…because he’s black. I believe you shouldn’t vote for someone because of the color of his/her skin, but because of what they bring to the table. I personally believe that Obama brings it all. I’m not old enough to vote, but I’ve heard what they both have to say and I’m for Obama all the way.(but that’s my opinion) If Obama happens to win, in his victory speech, he will most likely talk about his future plans, and how he will make it happen. I highly doubt he will say, “I won because I’m black…”
I like your perspective very much. I recommend the Newsweek issue. You should check it out.

Brianna,
You make a wonderful point in your last line. In fact Obama has never made an issue of his race–only his opponents have. I agree that it is sad and weird that
50 years after the civil rights movement, we still have to talk about race as an issue. And like you, I am hopeful now for the future. Thank you for your point of view and for helping to launch this zine!
